Did someone say Silicone?

Are you looking for a really easy way to not only spruce up your engine compartment but to give yourself some piece of mind?

Well my 2004 Jeep Unlimited has almost 100k on the odometer. Even though the hoses appear to be in ok shape, why risk a blown out hose and why not gain a little better flow at the same time?

The folks at HPS Performance Products have us covered!

In fact they have very complete kits for many of the years, makes and models of all kinds of vehicles! For my application it was Part Number: 57-1292-BLUE,  Jeep 02-06 Wrangler TJ 4.0L LHD (Left Hand Drive) HPS Blue High Temp Reinforced Silicone Radiator + Heater Hose Kit.

The kit is designed to replace stock OEM rubber coolant hoses and heater hoses which can eventually weaken over time, leading to premature failure. With premium quality silicone and race inspired design, this HPS silicone radiator coolant hose kit can withstand the harsh high temperature and high pressure operating conditions of the engine yet still maintaining peak efficiency during competition or daily driving.

Installation is very simple and can be done with basic hand tools. You will want some coolant and distilled water in order to replenish your fluids after the installation. I ended up replacing about a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water when all was said and done. A “Homer” bucket, screwdriver or sockets, and a pair of pliers are really all that are necessary. And a mop.

The 4 piece kit will replace the upper and lower radiator hoses as well as the long heater hoses that run along side the valve cover.

The OEM clamps are easily removed or “scooted” back with pliers.

Take your time. I did one at a time, but all of them can be removed to make more space for your hands. The lower radiator hose upper clamp can be a challenge since it is located behind the power steering pump (also hard to take pictures of), but just follow the hose and be patient in removing the OEM clamps. I know of a few folks that just cut the hoses off…which if you don’t plan on ever needing the OEM hoses, is up to you.

When refiling the radiator, again, be patient. Make sure there is some fluid in your overflow bottle as well.

A really simple upgrade that makes me smile each time I open the hood!
