A Jeeping Girl’s Perspective on SEMA

In all of the automotive world, the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas is the highlight of the year. Many want to go but always ask  “is it worth going?”

It has always been a “bucket list” item of mine and for many, many off-roaders and Jeepers.

The SEMA Show is the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world. It draws the industry’s most innovative minds and newest products from all over the globe to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The SEMA Show also provides attendees with educational seminars (which you must register to attend), product demonstrations, special events, networking opportunities and more. One million square feet of everything from heaven on wheels, new products, old classics, and crazy builds, to tire marks.

You better be prepared to put on some comfy shoes and stretch! It’s going to be a long 4 days of walking! And there’s something for EVERYONE…

I do not think I was prepared enough, so you better start taking long walks now! As someone told me “SEMA isn’t an old man’s game” and they weren’t lying!

Not to scare you away… the casinos have massage chairs if you need to get a good rub down, but… it is very exciting and full of energy, you won’t even notice your tired until the end of the day! Grab a map and have a plan – you’ll need it. And take advantage of the many staff to help you when you need information – they’ll get you where you need to go.

To participate in the SEMA show, you must apply for credentials and be accepted.

They do not allow consumers or general public into the SEMA Show. I can’t imagine what it would be like if they allowed the general public to attend, as it is crazy enough with the thousands of industry professionals!

After registration and with badges in hand you can feel free to roam. I felt so excited to finally be a part of this experience. I was like a kid in a candy store.  That’s why I say have a plan… you will miss so much if you run around crazy. I spent most of my time in the off-road exhibits hall (imagine that)!

I have to say that besides all the new innovative, cool, and bizarre builds, the networking with new and old friends was the best.  Oh, did I mention they have celebrity appearances? Wow! All the people I have admired and looked up to are there!

The new products exhibits blew my mind! Over 3,000 new parts are on display.

You can scan the items from your SEMA app or they give you a scanner in which you can scan products you would like more info about and they print it out for you. I took pictures of the things I wanted because I had tons of ground to cover still.

I’m glad you can’t purchase products  at the show or I would have been in lots of trouble. The displays and exhibitors and broken into 12 sections which makes it easier to focus on certain equipment or products you want to see.

From performance, wheels and tires, tools and equipment, to off-road. Outside you have builds of all kinds as well as the Ford performance where you can sign up to do ride-alongs and drift in the outside parking lot arena.

I have to say that you must try it! Do it all! I already have plans for next year.

I know , I know… A lot of the SEMA builds are crazy and it may not be your cup of tea. Say what you want , but these builds take time, blood, sweat and tears. Not to mention the thought process in making some pretty gnarly jeeps, trucks and concept cars.

It may not be for everyone but I still say they are fantastic!  Before you knock it and put it down, remember this, these guys put a lot of work and artistry in these builds to make it show worthy, as well as getting noticed and featured.

Attend SEMA if you can… you will come out with new ideas and the next big products for your ride, meet new people and network with the industry’s best. Until next year…
