MJ Destinations: The Providence Mountains, Mitchell Caverns Natural Preserve

There are still a few places that exist that feel like unfound treasures…very few…but they are still out there. We have been wanting to visit this place for the past few years and finally the stars aligned. Located within the boundaries of the 1.6 million acre Mojave National Preserve, the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area is one of those “unfound” treasures. I say “unfound” but the Chemehuevi people, a branch of the Southern Paiute, have lived in the area for over 500 years…having migrated into the area about 1,000 years ago.
In 1929, Jesse E. “Jack” Mitchell took a trip exploring for silver, but he came across the caverns and had an idea to turn them into a tourist attraction. In 1930 he staked several mining claims where the existing caverns are located. He and his wife Ida built tunnels and shipped ore out of the area to keep his mining claims alive while keeping his dream to provide tours his real goal. Over 20 years their income came from the $1 per person tour fee, along with money that came from Ida’s home cooked meals.
In the 1940’s Ida petitioned the California Division of Beaches Parks to add Mitchell Caverns to its inventory, and in 1954 they agreed. In 1972 the caverns became a part of the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area.
Located between I-40 and I-15, this place is a destination…but one that is worth the trip! A special shout out to the California State Parks. For reservations, they can be reached at reservecalifornia.com or 1-800-444-7275
And as always, PLEASE be respectful when visiting the places we recommend. We cherish our off the beaten path adventures and want to keep them pristine for the generations to follow!
Of course we wouldn’t be able to share these amazing places with you without the support of MetalCloak, supporting and promoting the off-road lifestyle!
