Stewardship Can Help Prevent the Mega-Fires

Across the West, the smoke hasn’t yet filled the skies.

The really big fires—the ones that make national headlines, close our forests, destroy trails, and change communities forever—haven’t arrived.

But they will.

Every year, we hope this will be different. Every year, we watch the weather, the fuels, and the headlines. And every year, we’re reminded that hoping isn’t a wildfire strategy.

That’s why I recently revisited one of the most important topics I’ve written about:

Welcome to the Mega-Fire Generation — Revisited

In this article, I take a fresh look at why today’s wildfires are so much bigger than those many of us fought decades ago, and more importantly, what each of us can do about it.

This isn’t just about firefighters.

It’s about all of us.

It’s about:

  • Being good stewards of our public lands.

  • Supporting sound, science-based forest management.

  • Volunteering with organizations that make a difference.

  • Speaking up for balanced land management before another million acres burn.

  • Teaching the next generation that prevention begins long before smoke appears.

I’ve always believed that stewardship isn’t just picking up trash on the trail.

It’s caring enough to stay involved.

Healthy forests, healthy rangelands, responsible recreation, active volunteers, and informed citizens all work together to reduce wildfire risk while keeping our public lands healthy and accessible.

If we want fewer mega-fires tomorrow, we need more stewardship today.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read the article—and if it resonates with you, please share it with someone else who cares about our forests and public lands.

NOTE: In my blog you’ll also find tips on being prepared for wildfire, links to great wildfire resources, and much more.  Just search “wildfire.”

As always…

Stay involved.
Stay informed.
