I know that our car batteries aren’t really that sexy. I mean, there’s not a lot of glamour surrounding something that sits under your hood…yet it is the life source of our Jeeps! Introducing Full Throttle Battery!

For me, I know that when my car battery is dead, well it becomes something far, far from sexy! Back in the day I trusted my Optima yellow top like it was part of my family. It endured years of abuse, hard winching, lots of accessories, etc…and was a workhorse until the day it wasn’t.

The original yellow top lasted me 7 or 8 years. The next one lasted almost 3. The replacement currently installed in Spike, my 2002 TJ, now lives on a trickle charger, which the guys at my local auto parts store say is mandatory these days. Ugh.

Those of you that know me, know that I travel to a couple of events each year…like 300 days in a hotel this year! Very seldom do I see “battery” guys at these off road events, until recently.

Don’t get me wrong, occasionally I will see the Optima trailer but only at the largest of events. Last year, at an Unlimited OffRoad Show event in Crystal Beach, Texas, I ran into David Schumacher, the Southwest sales guy for Full Throttle Battery. We talked for a while and I explained to him my frustrations. He gave me his card and some information about their products and we parted ways.

When I got home, I did some digging. Full Throttle Battery is Full River Battery based out of California. And I also began reading and learning more than I ever wanted to know about battery technologies!

The Comparison – Specs

So, to get to the point, here are the specs from a well known competing battery:

Pretty basic information. Those are the only product specs listed on their site. Here are the specs of the FT825, group 34, the battery that fits in my 2004 Jeep LJ:
And for even more information, check this out! Not many manufacturers give you this much information!
So, the quick comparison from the numbers isn’t really much of a comparison…the Full Throttle Battery wins the numbers battle easily in this comparison.
A better comparison would be with Odyssey batteries which are manufactured by EnerSys Energy Products Inc.. Prices are also more in line with Odyssey batteries.
The Installation
Well I contacted David after I had done all of the research I could understand. I knew I wanted to replace the Sears Gold battery in my 2004 Jeep LJ with a Full Throttle Battery.
Replacing a battery isn’t difficult or exciting. Loosen the tie down crossbar, loosen the terminals, pull out old battery, put in new battery, secure tie downs and terminals. Done.
Time will tell when it comes to battery life…but I do know that these guys have been awesome to work with and when I have questions I can get answers directly from the source…and thats worth its weight in gold!
